Eclipsing binaryRare, already known

Rare & notable finds

Something genuinely unusual turned up. Treat it as a lead: every one of these has ordinary explanations too, listed with each. How these checks work →

Already known: in SIMBAD as TYC 4491-165-1 (*); catalogued variable star nearby: ZTF J235122.73+730831.1 (EW, P = 0.36386 d), 166" away; in the TESS eclipsing-binary catalogue (Prsa et al. 2022) as TIC 0265274458. The rare-find check confirms what is on record - still nice, but not a new discovery.

  • Irregular deep dimming significant
10 deep dips at irregular times, depths from 1.0% to 14.7%. Not periodic and not a young star - like Boyajian's star ('Tabby's star'), one of the strangest stars known.
  • Eccentric eclipsing binary notable
The second eclipse comes at phase 0.200 instead of 0.5: the orbit is stretched (eccentricity at least 0.471). Eccentric binaries show how tides shape orbits, and their slowly turning orbits test General Relativity.

Notes

Rare, already known: Irregular deep dimming; Eccentric eclipsing binary (in SIMBAD as TYC 4491-165-1 (*); catalogued variable star nearby: ZTF J235122.73+730831.1 (EW, P = 0.36386 d), 166" away). Found automatically by hunt.py in TESS sector 24 (flagged in 1 sector(s)). Detection score 371.7. Not in VSX, ASAS-SN or ZTF variable catalogues at the time of the search; not in Gaia DR3's variable lists. Unchecked by hand yet: verify the period, nearby stars and a wider catalogue search. Updates: 2026-10-12 Rare-find check: Irregular deep dimming; Eccentric eclipsing binary 2026-10-11 Found by the automatic search in TESS sector 24
