Rare & notable finds

Something genuinely unusual turned up. Treat it as a lead: every one of these has ordinary explanations too, listed with each. How these checks work →

Already known: on NASA's TESS list as TOI 2616.01 (PC); SIMBAD lists TOI-2616 also as TOI-2616; in SIMBAD as TOI-2616 (*). The rare-find check confirms what is on record - still nice, but not a new discovery.

  • Microlensing (rogue planet?) significant
A one-off, symmetric brightening at BTJD 3899.65 that fits the gravitational-lens shape better than a flare (Einstein time 12.1 h). Events this short can be made by a free-floating (rogue) planet passing in front of the star. Very rare in TESS data; scattered light and asteroids can mimic it.
  • Lopsided transit hint
The start of the transit is deeper than the end: a dust tail (disintegrating planet), rings, a fast-spinning star, or a blend.
  • Single transit of another planet notable
Besides the known planet: one transit-like dip at BTJD 2099.45, 3.6 h long and 1.67% deep (~9.6 Earth radii). For a dip this long the orbit must take at least ~23 days: a cold, long-period planet - rare in TESS data.

Notes

Already known to NASA: TOI 2616.01 (PC). Rare, already known: Microlensing (rogue planet?); Lopsided transit; Single transit of another planet (on NASA's TESS list as TOI 2616.01 (PC); SIMBAD lists TOI-2616 also as TOI-2616). Already on NASA's TESS list as TOI 2616.01 (PC). Found automatically by hunt.py in TESS sector 28 (flagged in 5 sector(s)). Detection score 78.5. Not in VSX, ASAS-SN or ZTF variable catalogues at the time of the search; not in Gaia DR3's variable lists. Unchecked by hand yet: verify the period, nearby stars and a wider catalogue search.
